Isn't 185f too low ? I'd like to keep my temps between 100-110°C

I run mine at 110c all the time with the ad-e.

for me 185 is to low especially when running e85

Maybe contact the manufacturer and ask if them have a higher temp one

well not necessarily if you have a huge oil cooler or dual cooler setup it will never reach or take forever to reach the 104c needed to boil of the impurities in the oil.

You really don't want a 185f thermostat because it closes to low and when in sub zero temps this will dip the oil well below the desired 104c even with a stock cooler

That depends where you live and how you drive I guess, I have a huge dual cooler setup on my turbo Rx-8 with no thermostat and I have no problem keeping it right a 215-220F, even during the summer on 300 mile canyon runs. And my 335i runs even hotter than my rotary so I highly doubt overcooling of the oil will be an issue.

Very true but then again having a thermostat that will get you to the desired temp quicker and stay there is the one you want to get

Thermostat has nothing to do with cooling all it does is opens and closes on a desired set temp that's all

Thanks for clarifying that, And yes a better thermostat is better. But around here a thermostat is not needed unless you are worried about warm up times.

Choose which ever one you want, lots of options.

the best thermostat is the simplest one that gets the job done and less things that go wrong.

I got the bms oil tstat but it is getting colder and i want to install the stock tstat, but now i dont know how to fit it anymore.. is it the spring first? And goes the longer tip first in, or the smaller tip? It is the 07 model!

Thanks for any help

I can't remember but I think the short tip goes in first.

On this topic, there is a real oil tstat and its made by mossleman. It's a cnc unit that bolts onto the stock location and will run up to to coolers in series.

Ade supposedly has one coming out as well.

I thought it would be better to bring a thread back from the dead rather than start a new one (proof I searched!).

I see that the Mosselman kit has been mentioned a few times. How does it compare to the Stett kit? Stett uses the Improved Racing thermostat which was also brought up as a good piece. They both seem to be quality and about the same price.

When I ordered my car way back in 08 it wasn't clear that you needed to get the manual trans and the sport package to get the oil cooler. Up to this point temperatures have been fine because I don't track the car and am still on stock turbos. As part of the transition to single turbo I'm thinking it's time to add some additional oil cooling. Up to this point I haven't put a used part on the car, but ~$325 for a new oil filter housing seems steep when the used ones on Ebay are $50. Should I just bite the bullet and go new?

If not tracking i wouldn't waste my time, i rather run my oil hotter and change it more often on the street.

Because most street duties are short drives the quicker you get oil temp up to operating temp is far more beneficial for the longevity of your engine

The difference is packaging. The mossleman is clearly above the rest. The deletes are simply functional then you have to hide a thermostat box somewhere, which honestly is not attractive. If you don't mind then it doesn't matter but I vote mossleman housing.

I have the stock cooler and change my oil every 3k. Which has been a 1 year interval lately. But I intend to upgrade it. Stock cooler is weak

I recently installed the FTP Motorsports oil thermostat which fits into the stock oil cooler housing. The oil heats up pretty quickly to 220F and stays there. Previously was stock OCH but felt the oil was too hot at 240-245F as a daily driver. And before that for several years I was using the BMS oil thermostat which is really a diverter plug and felt the oil took too long to warm up, like @martymil mentions. So I’m pretty happy with the FTP Motorsports thermostat.

Good to know, FTP was on my short list since ADE seems to not be making theirs anymore.
