So i will be installing my speedtech turbo kit this next weekend and I will be relocating the coolant reservoir to the drivers side. Has anyone built a heat shield for the air filter? I was thinking about fabbing one out of aluminum, but not sure if it's worth the time. I still have the air scoops in my grill from my twins and was thing of somehow making the air funnel over to the passenger side. Has anyone tried anything like this?

335d piece for the radiator support, then nothing. That’s the best anyone has done so far. Would be cool to see someone take that next step.

Sounds like a cool project. In for ideas.
I'd say you'd need a 335d duct or some other way to get 'fresh' air over to that side of the bay at minimum.
Could we make a 335d airbox work?

Either way, first step make sure you have a good FMIC.

Yes, that will work. Then I guess I will have to fab up an airbox with some reflective tape or have it ceramic coated

So this is what I'm currently working on as a proof of concept to see if it actually helps. I opened the duct on my m3 bumper as well to get some extra air from the fender liner area, plus using the 335d inlet with scoops. This is nowhere near finished however.

Honestly I doubt any of these air filter 'mods' will add any real world performance gains. After going through a 'red hot' turbo and compressing the air I doubt any of this will matter. Your IC, meth, or e85 will have actual real world results. Slightly lower AITs from 'fresh' air? I REALLY doubt it will matter, especially at speed. Doubt their are dyno gains either.

I get the idea and why but I just don't see any real world performance gains.

When I used to do autocross in my evo the airbox I fabbed up made a big difference. Also running my stock airbox vs dci on my 15t turbos made a huge difference durring autocross events. When we did a hill climb event even just not having heat tape on the box raised it's to the point of pulling timing. Just trying to follow that over to this build. If spending 60$ building an airbox brings down the temps even 8* I'm okay with that.

8 degrees lower before going through a turbo? So it got ambient air that was 8 degrees lower? What was the delta after the turbo when you measured it?

Why would a filter there in the E9x not grab all the ambient air it wants at speed?

I never measured temps out of the turbo, just boost to see pressure drop over the intercooler since I was going off air density. Temp was measured pre turbo and throttle elbow. I'm not saying what you think is wrong, just going off what I know from building time attack/ autocross cars. I have not done any air density tests on the behind headlight area of a e90 chassis with a 335d inlet so I'm not sure how well it would work, this is just my daily so I dont feel like spending that much time on this car. Lol

your better spending the money and time on the biggest ic you can get, waste of time doing cold air intake on a turbo car.

Put your filter as close to a fresh flowing source of air and be done with it, that will give you a better result than boxing the filter/s in.

I thought about this for ever years ago when I switched over to "hot side inlets" I think the term hot side inlets triggered an alarm in all of out performance minds. We need to make this cool now it's hot bit I think it's a little split. At speed I don't think any ducting or shields really make much of a difference, now an auto-x event that is slow it might help a little bit but a 3rd or 4th gear pull we may never see a difference in a log

I noticed 10* difference on a 45 min drive with mic of city, highway, and 4 3rd to 5th pulls. Days had different ambient but both days were withing 5* and ambient vs pre and post intercooler were recorded and there was a 10* difference between shielded and non shielded. For me 15 mins with a body saw and tin snips is worth it. The aluminum and reflective tape is all free from my days of racing.

I stand corrected, you can't see in this picture but my inlets and outlets are wrapped in dei gold reflective tape. 10* is a lot if you ask me. Maybe I will get around to making a nice shield. Did you snip out some of the fender?
My car never sees rain so I wanted to cut louvers right into the fender liner area.

All in all I do think it's an area most of the community ki da neglected or ever gave that much thought. They just buy what's out there and called it a day. We all ki da just settled I stead of getting creative

So when I put the m3 bumper on I had to modify the scoops to work with the oil cooler and m3 bumper. When doing so I had to modify the stock scoop and m3 scoop and it now routes air to the oil cooler and up behind the headlight/fender liner area. Works pretty well, especially with the 335d air duct

This is what i did with my e82 using 335d scoop. Theres still an opening for the factory oil cooler lines to pass. Been thinking installing an aftermarket oil cooler on driver side and delete the factory oil cooler. This way will be able to get ram air from pass. Side oil cooler duct. I also have hood vents to help keep under hood temp. Down.

335D duct needs to be shortened to fit?
