The 'mild hybrid' idea isn't new but it is new to BMW. Later this year the European 5 series will being to receive the 48v starter/generator and a second battery to assist the recuperation of energy while braking and also to give a small bump in torque in the form of an electric 'overboost' function while accelerating and provide small assistance when possible to aid with efficiency.

I'm not entirely sure if the 48v system applies to only the starter/generator or if this is a entire revamp of the electrical system. This also enables the seamless start/stop function which eliminates the harshness and vibration from the startup process.

This new technology will be applied to the 520d Sedan and Touring models and no mention of the gas powered 5 Series at the moment.
