Preface

Credit to @BMWJunkie for what he wrote here: https://bmw.spoolstreet.com/threads/m4-dct-flywheel-in-335is.1080/

The BMW DCT on the E chassis comes with an extra damper of some sort that adds about 10 pounds to the flywheel. Not only does this add quite a bit of weight to the rotational assembly but it also is suspected to induce some vibrations/chatter at higher power levels, tripping the knock sensors on the cylinders closest to it, 5 and 6.The initial solution discovered was to use an M4 flywheel which eliminates that extra mass. This is the M4 F chassis Flywheel(Left) and the E chassis Flywheel(right):

There are issues with this solution:

  • The M4 Flywheel can be hard to find for a decent price
  • The flywheel is still heavier than a true aftermarket flywheel(23lb vs 15lb)
  • It only comes in 6 bolt flavor and isn't an option for many who do a DCT Swap
There is a second solution which involves machining off the extra mass and attempting to properly balance. The quality of this work will vary from shop to shop, the labor costs may vary greatly, and sourcing an 8 bolt version of this flywheel is difficult for those in the US since it was never an option here.

Product

The next step is to produce a true aftermarket flywheel with both 8 bolt and 6 bolt crank configurations, which @MFactory is available to do.

The price for the DCT SMFW is $499.95, weighs 7kg(15.5lb), which is 9kg(17.5lb) less than the factory E Chassis DCT flywheel, and even 8lb lighter than the M4 flywheel. So even if you aren't having misfire issues, this flywheel is substantially lighter and is an upgrade for anyone with a car housing a compatible DCT flywheel.

  • For 8 bolt cars, the designs are ready to go, we just need you to sign up for the group buy.
  • For 6 bolt cars, please sign up but MFactory still requires a sample unit to confirm the PCD on the holes first.
UPDATE: The 6 bolt sample has been received!

---------------------------

Group Buy

Please vote on the poll for which option you want. You can see who has signed up by clicking the vote count. Once there are ten 8 bolt signups or ten 6 bolt signups, 50% deposits will be paid and a sample unit will be created and tested. If it works then rest will be produced.

UPDATE: The 6 and 8 bolt designs will be produced in the same batch!

I guess the next question, does anyone have a spare 6 bolt they can send to MFactory? I will have my DCT here in a few days, if nobody volunteers by then I will ship it just to help you guys out, even though I have an 8 bolt.

Does it have to be a DCT flywheel? Or will any 6 bolt flywheel work to get the bolt pattern?

The pitch/circle/diameter of the manual transmission flywheel should be the same as the dual clutch transmission because they both mount to the same crankshaft, amirite?

We already have a 6-bolt available for the MT, but before we make a 6-bolt for the DCT, we need to be 100% sure on the fitment hence requiring a DCT 6-bolt (not an MT 6-bolt). The last thing we want to do is make a batch of them only to find out they don't fit.

Again, will this work for a 6MT? I'm down to purchase the 8bolt but not unless I can verify if it will work on my car.

Well seeing how it's in the DCT transmission subforum, and it says DCT Flywheel, I'd say probably not.

My DCT and flywheel are sitting on my garage floor. I have a 6 bolt and willing to ship to Mfactory. Would need to know a little more about this prior to sending, but sounds like a good option for being one of the first to have it and more importantly help me make my deadline for the season beginning.

We already have flywheels for the MT in stock and ready to ship.

This thread is for the DCT flywheels :)
