I don't have a picture. But I found an old email from vtt the linkage from the steering wheel to the rack is physically in the way. On a xi the steering rack sits behind the first part of the subframe. Where on the I the rack is in front.

Hey, So looking at this pic from VTT
http://www.e90post.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1713370&stc=1&d=1509338771
It looks like the steering rack is behind the first part of the subframe.

This on this one (XI) the steering rack is also behind..

Comparing the two, it looks like the steering rack is right behind the ac compressor, or right under where the HPFP will be. It doesn't go as far back to touch axles either.

@doublespaces the lines look like they might be an issue. but since they are lines, they could probably be relocated somehow.

The subframe looks bigger, but I think it could fit. Looking at this image of a 335i.

The pulley hitting the subframe was more my concern than anything. The subframe is shaped quite a bit differen up front, it rises up for the sway bar.

But I vote for you buying a shotgun and letting us know what happens :)

That is the one restriction, even with the RWD cars, there is only about a 1/2 inch from the back of the pump(and corresponding fuel inlet) and the steering rack.

My car is now making a knocking sound, I talked to someone who had the same issue and it was a dead hpfp. Car sounds angry right now. Anyone else had an hpfp go bad?

Yes it sounds like the pump, is it new or did you reuse your old one ?

I had my mates go bad but that was and older pump.

I bought it from @Snelson3003 with ~400 miles on it. It was a warranty pump he got but turned out not yotbe the issue so he sold it. I'm gonna pull this one and move my old one down. Is it bad if there is no cap on the stock location temporarily?

You got to have a cap otherwise oil will spill out
Is this true on the relocated pump as well? I don't recall any oil provisions...

Where does the other pump get its oil, from the vacuum pump housing? I don't recall any oiling?

Seems like the pumps are lubed by fuel and the cap overs a hole in the motor in lieu of a pump there to keep (edit: engine oil, in reference to your question) from splashing out.

Keep what from splashing out? Fuel? How is fuel supposed to make it past a check valve exactly? And fuel and oil, we need to figure out the terminology here... So is there oil that will come out of the stock location hpfp spot or not?

I thought it was pretty clear. Asked and answered, using the word oil. Without the HFPF in the stock location, covering the hole on the side of what is like a timing chain housing area of the block, engine oil that lubes the inside of the engine including the key device that interfaces with and turns the HPFP shaft, will have a way to fall out of the engine. That's why both the HPFP and VTT block off plate for single barrel have an o-ring around them.

ETA: edited my post for clarity.

There is actually a vacuum pump that sits between the block and high pressure pump, oil passes through that as well I take it?

Crank case pressure may have something to do with that o-ring as well. Anyway thanks for the replies.

Oil from the timing cases gets past the vacuum pump and sort of helps with lubrication around the hpfp key that spins the hpfp.

Without the block off plate oil will slowly or quickly leak past the vac pump, never tried it or will to prove a point.

I got two of those plates but being on the otherside of the planet wont help you right know

You could always overnight one from vtt or buy a new pump from fcp to take advantage of their lifetime warranty

Where are you located martymil?
Would you be willing to assemble one more fuel line for me, I will ofcause pay for it, so that I can also upgrade the fuel side before the HPFP...
Do you have a link to where and how to drill the fuel rail?
