Well she is going to be even better with a built motor. Would love to hear what route you take once you have it all figured out.

Finally had a chance to look at the log. I didn't know bootmod3 had an OTS map for the PS2. I am not super familiar with bootmod3, but it looks like your boost is around 10-11psi at redline but the target is supposed to be closer to 17? Do you use 91 octane?

This is just the OTS stage 2 tune from PTF/BM3. They design their maps at sea level and I'm at altitude, so the difference comes down to that and having PWG doesn't help.

I'm still holding out hope that it's just your turbo that's toast. I've killed two PS2s on my X3 at our 5,500 foot altitude.
Houtan, the mild wgdc on the ots tune, combined with the altitude, yields the boost deficit in the upper RPM.
If you need to rebuild it, I'd be inclined to go with @GhassanAutomotive . They're just over in Oklahoma and seem to be very experienced in BMW motor rebuilds at reasonable prices. You could flatbed your car there and drive it home. Maybe with a built motor and BigBoost 3.4?

Ha ha. Very optimistic. I am sure there's a hole in the block from cylinder 6 though. Engine doesn't turn over and oil was all over everything. Just luck of the way my stock turbo blew really.

Definitely have a hole in the block. I don't have the engine yet but the shop says it was cylinder 3 or 4 on the passenger side. I thought 6 because that was the only cylinder giving codes prior to this (something regarding burn time and not being within tolerance). Really really crazy that I didn't have any signs aside from the oil consumption.

Replacement has 22,740 miles and is coming out of an identical car (2017 X3). Build date is 4 months after my car so hoping this is the best choice. Pretty much everything will be replaced so I should get some idea for how the engine was treated in those 22K. Fingers crossed! Engine should be here in a couple weeks and then I will be able to start tearing down.

What did you pay for that motor, with shipping? Did you get it off of eBay?

It was around $5500 with freight, a little more expensive for my shop to buy but they would deal with any warranty issues for that mark-up. Bought through a PRP junkyard in IL.

Not knocking anyone, but built N55 is just a can of worms I decided I'm not ready to open. Nobody has been able to do it reliably besides BMW, and I'm sticking with the PS2 so I don't need anything extra. Ghassan may have been cheaper but I'd wait quite awhile.

Hey man, have you used Ghassan? I heard some bad things and I started a poll and could only get a couple of reviews from actual customers and most of those few were not great, a few were.

Here's the damage: https://photos.app.goo.gl/azjjwFm1oAWWBg838

That's cylinder 4 that popped. So not 6 like I suspected from logs. Must have really been leaking oil past rings to be that wet on both sides. Anybody have theories?

Wrist pin is lodged between the crank and block, I also have to order a backup tranny because we can't get the Torque Converter off this engine and nobody but BMW sells them. A brand new TC is $2700 lol.

PS2 still looks and feels great, so not rebuilding it or anything. New engine has a few parts swapped on.

I'm pretty dumbfounded considering there were never misfires or codes. Thinking back there was a small "imbalance" I could feel at idle, but that was quite literally the only symptom aside from oil burning. The thing about that imbalance, is I think I remember feeling it after the accident in 2018, before my stock turbo went. The guys working on the car now think this engine failure is detonation related and I can't disagree, but it's still hard to say for sure.

Some of the carnage is pretty hilarious, trying to save all of it for my teardown in a month or two.

Hey, sorry to hear about the car. I know a guy that works for a warehouse that supplies OEM parts directly to multiple dealerships. Trust me, its all legit and he has saved me a few times in the past with regard to cutting cost. Dealer quoted me $3700 to repair my a/c compressor and all the associated pulleys (LOL), i was able to have it all done for just shy of $600 using all OEM parts. Send the full vin and i'll see if he could be of assistance with the TC.

Rod bearing from the cylinder that went. ended up being cylinder 4 actually, I was backwards when I first looked at things.

Trying to get a clean room environment and hoist setup this weekend so I can start figuring it out. Going to be really difficult to get the torque converter off without ruining it, I'd like to sell it if I can. Once the replacement tranny/TC comes in everything should be wrapped up.

Motor is in! Flashed the trans and DME back to stock for my "break-in" miles and got a chance to feel things at idle. I officially pick up tomorrow.

I do not feel the same idle imbalance that I did on the dead motor, so I am fairly convinced the bent rod theory was on point. Should get the broken engine parked in my garage this week to start figuring it out.

I'm thinking 2-3000 miles over the next few weeks at stock, as long as oil isn't burning this engine should last!

Currently on the stock tune like I said I'd be, but I'll probably cut that break-in to my errand runs around town this week. Had a few chances to do some nice pulls this weekend, here's a healthy engine if I've ever seen one!

Not burning oil as far as I can tell. After that break-in period I will likely go back to the tune I was on (Stage 2 91, bootmod3 has updated it and seems to have a bit more power as of version 8.1). Excited since it looks like boost control is a little happier based on throttle angle and WGDC: I can't feel any of those throttle angle surges but they are more frequent than they used to be.

Check out these exhaust tips, cleaned them up since they used to be caked in black, after a decent drive with a few pulls to redline, nothing to speak of!

It's been a hell of a Friday, but I got the broken engine into storage where it will be disassembled. Ironic that I'm making the car sit down there with this curse of an engine.

Just checked; i was told that those items were only available via special order. I asked for a ballpark cost figure and he was unable to give an answer because they generally don't stock it.

I must say that is a brilliant use of the rented Home Depot truck, holy crap man. That is big brain time.

It was going really well until I braked a little too hard. At least I don't care about what happens to this engine now! Definitely the cheapest way to get it moved.
