Spec 3+ clutch or Mfactory twin disk clutch

    Going single turbo with the doc 6766 kit. Also decided to upgrade clutch while doing this as I'd only burn out the act 6 puck I have in now (565tq rating) quickly. I see there's has been problems with the spec twin disk not lasting which worries me about spending the money on the twin disk. Mfactory offers a twin disk that's pretty reasonable in price compared to others while being a known brand. However the spec 3+, I have seen reviews of handling the power of single turbo cars fine. Anyone have any input to help my purchase decision? I already have a Mfactory smfw however the twin disk utilizes its own so this wouldn't be used unless I chose the spec3+.

    At least with the MOTIV twin disk, the price included a flywheel which is not the case for Spec stage 3/5. The torque limits are much higher with the twin disk depending on configuration. I believe Stage 3 tops out around 671ftlbs. The MOTIV twin disk is upwards of 900-1000ftlbs.

  6. Can find the Spec stage3+ plus MFactory flywheel for $1200. Drives better, grips less aggressively, and makes less noise than the twin disk. 671ft-lbs might be the 'torque limit' on paper but it will handle more than that. And if you're smart, you won't try and push that much very often on a stock motor anyway.

    Twindisk looks good on paper, but my experience with twin disc clutches is soured. Harsh engagement, small slip window, and loud. YMMV

    Not referencing motiv. The twin disk would be Mfactorys which comes with a flywheel. Otherwise I already have a Mfactory flywheel is I went with the spec clutch. And the stage 5 is rated for 850tq or something.

    They also offer a stage 5 clutch that can handle 850 ish tq
     
  9. In most cases I recommend our st customers to go with a stage 3+. The reasoning is pretty much exactly what Sered stated. I would choose the Motiv twin disk over the the spec stage 5 though.

  11. I don't have any experience with that one yet, but I expect it is very similar to the Motiv twin disk.

    What's the downfall on the stage 5? Only reason I'm asking is because I'm probably just going to go with the clutch rather then twin disk. But with a price difference off $100 between the 3+ and the 5 I kinda feel over doing it in this situation may be better. Your opinion?
     
  13. The pedal will most likely be extremely heavy, and a very on or off clutch. If you don't think the 3+ is up to the task twin disk is really the next step. I've driven the motiv, and the CM fx850. the CM drove a little better, but was super noisy. Motiv offers some "street" disks which are supposed to be less harsh. I drove the race disks.

    Twin disk noise is fixed by changing idle rpm to 900 in MHD, fwiw.
     
  15. idle noise yes. the fx850 will chatter in normal driving up to 3500rpm

    If I was going to go twin disk I'd probably choose to go with the mfactory due to cost. Motiv is more than I'm willing to spend. I'd rather replace the spec clutch twice. I don't daily the car it sees the track for roll racing, autocross, and the occasional "mexico" runs.

    If I didn't just purchase the doc kit, stage 3 fuel pump, EOS intake manifold w/ the fueling kit, 1M kit, and still need to have the car painted or wrapped because of that things might be different lol.

    I have the motiv twin disk, after raising the idle I have no chatter at any point in the rev range. I have been driving it for 5,000 miles with no slip so far. It isn't super easy to start in 1st gear almost seems like it doesnt engage the same way every time, but at least the pedal is as light as stock.
     
  18. That's a REALLY high idle. You car will be making more noise at that level and probably sound like the idle circuit is broken/untuned.

    Nope I set mine to the same it doesn't affect anything and idles just like normal you wouldn't notice. Plus it helps taking off in first because the lightweight flywheel drops rpm so quick
     
  20. Yup. That's a high idle. Makes a lot of exhaust noise comparatively. I can imagine it helps taking off in first, as day to day drivability is pretty poor.
