On all the fuel line and filter questions, @SpoolPerformance provides a kit which, if you like where it locates the filter, then you are good to go. If you prefer to mount the filter elsewhere, a cup of coffee and a walk through this thread may help out.

For example, @barry@3DM and I mounted my HPFP fuel filter in the large open space between the engine/trans and tunnel (if curious posts 107 and 109 on my build thread lay out the details.) I don't really see this filter as needing service on any regular basis. Generally these filters are huge, already downstream of other filtration. Look at the size difference, compared to the HPFP internal filter. Anyway food for thought.

They've been designed for e10-15 or so, but outside of the US, flex-fuel up to e85 is much less popular. Don't know of a single BMW that came with flex-fuel from the factory. Unless you're dodge/ford/gm or you're selling cars in brazil, most cars just aren't designed for the concentrations we're running.

Hence why it would be interesting for @SpoolPerformance to fire up a separate thread to share their HPFP research, instead of our crashing their product release thread. One of the questions I have, compound, can the HPFP be rebuilt by mere mortals and is there a seal upgrade that would be ethanol safe?

The problem with e85 its has very little additives to help lubricate the fuel system like 93 has.

You can add e85 lube to help minimise the harmful effects of it but not stop it or keep your blends under e30.

E85 is a great fuel for racing and power but not so friendly to the pumps and injectors as many of us have found out the hard way.

I was surprised to learn there are a good number of people that run a fuel lubricant - heck, they even make scented ones. Most would make me vomit, but they make em!

Ugh as a ChemE I don't know where to start. Aromatics vs hydrocarbons vs alcohols. Which ones are the lubricants again? Alcohols do tend to dry things but heyy aromatics tend to melt them soooo....

Long-time no post...Hope everyone is well. Catching up on this thread but good to see the N54 world is still pushing the envelope.

I'm not an expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn one time.

I thought that aromatics, like xylene and toluene are solvents and would reduce lubrication as well, right? Isn't the concern with E85 simply the quantity vs other fuel types and the reduction of lubrication?

Can you elaborate on what you mean by aromatics tend to melt things. It's difficult to glean context from the internet - are you saying that it's all a bunch of 'hullabaloo' and not to be worried about the lack of lubrication?

I think he means crazy egt. Toluene has very high temps even race gas is hot.

I think this is likely to be the only "real" stock-style HPFP upgrade offered, if it ever is.

Knowing Spool and how they're exploring the fuel system of the various BMW turbo I6's I could at least see them breaking down how one could go about doing that or possibly even releasing an "e85 HPFP" but that's 100% conjecture on my part and just due to how I see them as a company from my dealings with them and from talking to them while testing the Helix 4x. I second the vote for a breakdown on their findings with the HPFP though!

You're still alive?
Barely  I'm back in school to get my MBA so alas, the car had to go. Didn't want to take on a bunch of debt and it went to someone who will drive it hard, rather than have it languish in the parking lot. I miss it dearly...But still like to check in and see how the community is progressing. I'll live vicariously through yall.

Hope all is well with you man.

Yes sir. I'm on the EKPM2, and some sort of "stage 3+" setup - bucketed 450, and then a bucket less 450 attached to the side of the bucket that sits on the bottom of the tank.

No issues with my EKP in the 1.5+ years I've had a stage 2 pump, and my Hobbs switch is your standard 15psi switch. It's just hidden better and in the trunk.

My ChemE brother, large and/or amphiphilic molecules are good for lubrication. Polymers of course. Long chain alkyls, possibly polyols that mix well with alcohol, etc. :)
