Not sure exactly where to post this so...
I've been having issues with my Navigation system for the last two days.
When I start the car I get a message saying "starting navigation system" with a spinning circle and it doesnt ever start.
I've tried rebooting the system by holding down the audio button for 8 seconds and I've tried disconnecting the battery.
Any other suggestions?

Which audio button are you talking about, the general power button? I didn't know that was to reset the unit, I hope that works because I've wanted to do that before.

Have you tried a map update? There is a DVD for doing this.

Yeah it not really a "power button" per se but more like a mute button as the audio always stays on. But, to answer your question, you can perform a restart of the system by holding it down for 8 seconds.

I haven't tried a map update as I can't even get the CD player to work in this state.

Did this problem just pop up out of nowhere, or have you made any changes lately? Have you inspected your GPS antenna connection?

What year is your car? It might be time for you to buy one of those Android screens. I'm not sure if they are compatible with CIC navigation vehicles however.

It was totally out of nowhere. I stopped to pick up a friend while listening to music and the system reset itself and this all started happening. I'm going to dig around in the trunk to see if anything is wet or broken.

Car is a 2010. If I can't find a solution I think I will start replacing things one at a time until something works.

Found on bimmerfest:

I struggled a lot to fix navigation hang issue. It started in winter season due to cold weather. I have 528xi. Here is the resolution

The issue was due to Bluetooth equipment in trunk. If you unplug the cable of the Bluetooth, you can temporarily fix the issue as you can use navigation system but no audio.

However, the best thing which completely fix the problem was, I took off the Bluetooth part from the trunk. Then opened the Bluetooth box (you can easily get a screw driver 5$). Then using a heat gun, I heated the whole circuit. Just make sure you keep moving the heat gun and don't over melt the circuit.

Then I put the Bluetooth equipment back in trunk and connected the cables. Now its been almost 8-9 months and it is working as new. This idea was pasted by someone else but I am pasting it again as it really works.

Otherwise changing that part is expensive and full of hassles

When you do the manual re boot does this system actually reboot?

It does reboot but it goes back to the same issue.

Cool. Thanks for the information. I will try it and report back.
