I kinda forgot that this thread was still going and will be for a long time..

To recap.. Tony's results were bitter sweet.. Totally awesome he had the results he did but I think it made us all lose sight on their true purpose.. Its absolutely was not to add double and triple digit whp number you your pull.. It was to gain drivabilty as well as a support system for plain and simple a more aggressive tune.. I think the "damage" is already done with the expectance of big whp additions unfortunately

Exactly. I love the gains he had and it goes to show you just how good our car is at making the most out of components past their design. I can't think of a better motor than Tony's to really put these coils (and his rods) through their paces. It also means his gains are at the extreme end of the spectrum. The fact he is running a .022 gap with like 20psi when most can run .031 with the same boost on these coils should tell you something about the cylinder pressures and airflow that motor is seeing. He needs bigger, laggier turbos but until then I'd love to see him tractor pull with that 900tq!

Its quit the sale pitch for spool on his go's to be honest.. Actually this whole thing has nothing g to do with coils and all to do with Tony's car being pretty rad lol

Ok guys so we got the Precision Raceworks coil packs installed. This will be our review, and results thread.

First off the kit comes very nice as far as fit, and finish. Everything fits well, and is high quality. Install is straight forward per the install guide but we do want to add a couple things.

First off you need this depin tool, its cheap, and it makes your life SO MUCH easier. Trying to depin these without the proper tool is a pain.

Tool is here, and is 10 bucks on prime: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009OR906/?tag=clicksource-20

Next you want this dielectric grease. The plug connections are tight, and need to pushed down hard to seat properly. This on both the boots going to the plugs, and the coil plug wires make them slide on easily, and snap into place. This or another version can be found at any auto parts store: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DOEJZTK/?tag=clicksource-20

Ok now on to the results. We wanted this to be about hardware ONLY. So we literally opened up MHD, loaded the same tune we had been running, checked the PR Coils check box, and flashed. So the tune was 100% identical to what we had been running except for dwell, and spark table changes for the new coils.

During install I had opened the gap from .018 to .024, I can say even for our low boost this was too much. I had random misfires, and had to drop the gap down to .022, and all the misfires went away. So we were able to pick up .004 gap, with no misfires. Before if we got anything over .018 at all that cylinder would misfire heavily

The first run, I thought something was not right, we had picked up around 110WTQ in the mid range, almost 70WHP, and the car simply made a ton more power, and tq from the time we went WOT to 6500 or so. No real gains up top because well the turbos are honest struggling up there currently

That first run we blew an intercooler hose underneath so I had to pull the car off the dyno, and put it on the lift. No time that day so we went home, and came back the next day, fixed the hose, and back on the dyno she went. I was skeptical the gains were going to be there in back to back pulls. Well once back on the dyno, the data was quantified, every run was the same. Massive gains down low, and smooth pulls all the way up. Car seems to idle smoother, and pull smoother as well.

In other words for the price of this upgrade, they gain insane amounts of power, and tq at least in our testing, you can increase plug gap, and the car seems smoother. Really a no brainer

Hello, I'm curious as to what intake manifold is being used on this engine?

Does VTT make this item or can you please send me the link so I can research this manifold?

Sincerely,

cjn

My first post is dead clear, SAME tune, I simply checked the box that is in MHD for the PR coils. I am not here to sell PR coils, we post results as we always do, good, bad or otherwise.

You have a great day!
What does checkbox in MHD for the PR coils do ?

What does checkbox in MHD for the PR coils do ?

It increases the coil dwell (charging) time as they can charge much longer than oem, and disables multispark to lighten load on DME, though I've not found that necessary. The original checkbox was actually overly conservative, it's been revamped months ago with even more dwell, just waiting for MHD to update it.

Do you know if BL and PR are treated the same by MHD?

What do you mean? The two styles are completely different, the checkboxes do different things altogether. BL 100% needs the checkbox to function properly afaik as it's a completely different setup, the harness adds electronics to convert the factory low side signal to a TTL signal etc. If anything the BL option changes codes, system checks, and dwell I'd presume. The PR checkbox is only dwell and disabling multispark, which isn't even necessary now. PR coils don't need any flash changes to run, but you leave a lot on the table if you do not raise the dwell (charge) time. You can charge them twice as long as OEM coils before you saturate them without any issues.

I can tell you having made the BL changes to my bin myself that changing the dwell to suit the R8 coil is the only thing needed. I do disable multi spark but don’t believe it’s necessary based on conversations I’ve had with him. No other coding is needed. I run the BL coils without the box checked in MHD as my changes were done prior to the MHD update.

As an edit the adaptive learning for the dwell was also changed to remove/prevent any dwell being added.

What do the new dwell tables look like? I have mine set to 3.5ms in the operative range (range most commonly used) is it even longer now?

According to conversations I had with BL they had to disable some codes and a few other things related, but possibly they spoof things in the harness now or maybe it was just exaggerated. Dwell and aging would be the minimum you'd want to change.
