Why is the next gen M5 called an F90 instead of G90?

Since we are moving onto the G chassis generation in the next year or two, why in the world is there an F10 M5 and now an F90 M5, on an entirely different platform? This makes very little sense to me, can someone explain?

It's when the prototype is designed. All those numbers in between, say f91 f92 f93 or f88 f89 didn't make the cut. They chose f90 so all those other numbers get trashed and now we are on to Go

It's use to drive me nuts too till I had an old instructor explain the process to me. Think e60 e61 e63 e64 then e65 e66.. where the e62?? It was a design that got the axe..

I can understand that, but my point is, they got the entire letter wrong, 7 year generational problem. It should be G9X

It's all about when the project was conceived.. the new 5 is the G30 so it's 40 off. They have so many chassis designations now it's hard to keep up. We had E cars for decades.. hit the Fs it they went nuts with new chassis codes!!

Anyways yes it is odd but the way it played out.. think of it like this, they designed the f90 first then the G01-11 was a dud then the G12 7 series.. then 12-30 all duds.. so far they may imtroduce a G07 ect.. that will have been designed before the G30 just not released before it..

Very peculiar to me, there has to be some sort of standardization, which is why sedans are typicaly the 0, wagons the 1, coupes the 2 and vert the 3. At least, recently they seem to follow that trend. I would love to get some more inside information on this, but that does explain some of the irregularities. I wonder what their original G chassis M5 was going to be, I guess it turned out like a turd or they are saving it for the LCI or beyond.
