Depends on the parts and how they look. Imo, the factory style look is best because it means the fit, finish, material choices, etc are all well thought out and executed, unlike taking some polished aluminum elbows and throwing some colorful silicone couplers and cheap clamps on and having some mismatched gaudy engine bay that looks like shit.

The use of aftermarket parts doesn’t always mean gaudy or mismatched though.

Working on an adapter for the 740 air box to the stock snorkel for the Z4. The Stock snorkel is a bit restrictive for what we are trying to do with more air flow so trying to a second 3" inlet pipe that could go to the headlight area or maybe even the wheel well.

This does not fit but shows the idea...

If this works out, We'll see if we can open these stock pipes a bit with another adapter (instead of the stock 740 Y-pipe)

Those 2” on that stock 740i y-pipe are small. Are you using pvc for the 3D printed parts?

I need to change some of those numbers for the 740. I didn't measure the ID of the Y pipe shown in the photo above.
when I get to it, I'll update this post to indicate the correct numbers.

That’s pretty cool, but the small diameter seems like a significantly smaller cross section than the snorkel coming from the grill. Also, it might be worth adding some very large radii to the merges from the 2 into 1 to smooth out the airflow. Great job though!

The bigger problem from my measurements is the absurdly small cross section of the intake over the front radiator support. Hence the need for a second air feed.

Well, total affective area, ae, is still going to be your main hurdle, and those two inlets don’t look like they’ll have the same ae as the part they mate to.

let me make sure I’m very clear though. I think this is an awesome projects and am very impressed with what has been made so far. This kind of stuff is so much more difficult when you don’t have all the industrial grade design and fab equipment.

I think this is what you are referring to.
Those 2 pipes merge together almost immediately.

That’s correct. The merge looks good, but I would smooth out the transitions outlined in blue with as large of a radius as you can. The smoother the transition, the better/more laminar the flow.

btw, how do you like your race deck flooring? Did you consider swisstrax? What swayed you? Feel free to answer via pm.

@NoQuarter I recall you and I ran some measurements back and forth on this, some time back, trying to figure out what made sense. I'm going to see if I can find the info in a Google sheet somewhere ... The airbox filter is nominal from E89 to F01 - ~6%.

@The Convert definitely understand your constructive criticism. I was just adding that the existing area at the snorkel squeezed over the top of the radiator core support is astonishingly small.

I've sourced the F01 intake muffler. and hope to run a version of the pipe setup Jim shows (thanks to @BQTuning on the legwork originally on all this, BTW).
